INTERNSHIPS THROUGH THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY ARTS COMMISSION INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Eligibility
Student eligibility for internship positions is limited to currently enrolled full-time undergraduates who either reside in and/or attend college in Los Angeles County, will have completed at least one semester of college by June of the program year, and will not graduate before December of the program year. Candidates are welcome from all areas of undergraduate study and are not required to have demonstrated a previous commitment to the arts.
Students interested in internships apply directly to the host organization. Available internships will be posted on the Commission web site by mid-March of the program year (including specific application instructions for each internship). Early application is suggested. Applications may not be accepted after May 15, 2008.

Internship: Operations Assistant
The California Philharmonic, an organization that blends excitement, entertainment, education and enlightenment, is seeking a highly motivated person to join our team for an internship position in operations. Specific duties include solicitation and negotiation of vendors and all aspects of production of an outdoor festival series with attendance of approximately 28,000. The intern must have excellent communication skills, familiarity with basic office productivity software, good time management abilities and be self-motivated.
The Operations Assistant will be instrumental in all production aspects of the Cal Phil Festival on the Green outdoor concert series. Specific duties will include assisting the Production Manager in the solicitation, negotiations, cultivation, scheduling and coordination of all vendors and services. Currently, we work with approximately 30-35 outside vendors each year, who specialize in services ranging from production (electrical, staging, lighting, parking, security, police and fire departments, first-aid, sanitation and venue) to food and beverage. The Operations Assistant will also help coordinate the needs of our corporate sponsors and marketing partners as well as the needs of our Festival Village caterers. Additionally, the Operations Assistant will be key in the setup and breakdown of all aspects of the venue, coordinating crews of employees and volunteers ranging in size from 3 persons to 50. In addition to office-based work (primary), this position does require some on-site physical labor.
The Operations Assistant Intern should learn and/or experience the following during their tenure with the California Philharmonic:
- Thorough understanding of operations process and the nature of event production
- How to develop and cultivate partner relationships with third parties
- Behind the scenes understanding of a large arts organization
- Logisitics: planning and implementation
- Supervisory skills
- Budgeting
The successful candidate will possess excellent verbal and time management skills, a working familiarity with Microsoft Office and other office productivity applications and be self-starting. It is essential that the candidate possess good people and communication skills, a pleasant personality and willingness to adapt and learn. The intern's duties include concert production at our outdoor venue (The Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden) and/or Walt Disney Concert Hall. Knowledge of music, although helpful, is not required.

Internship: Artistic Production Assistant
The California Philharmonic, an organization that blends excitement, entertainment, education and enlightenment, is seeking a highly motivated person to join our team for an internship position in artistic production. Specific duties include artistic production of two parallel symphony orchestra concert series and a chamber music series. The intern must have excellent communication skills, familiarity with basic office productivity software, good time management abilities and be self-motivated.
The Artistic Production Assistant will assist the Artistic Administrator in duties ranging from featured artist and orchestra musician relations, to artistic planning and stage management. This intern be a vital member of the artistic production team for both Cal Phil Festival on the Green and Cal Phil at Walt Disney Concert Hall. We will be producing 11 symphony orchestra concerts and 2 chamber music concerts during the internship period, all of which the Artistic Production Assistant will be involved with. This internship position will also interface with the Music Director, Music Librarian and Production Manager regularly. In addition to office-based work (primary), this position does require some on-site physical labor.
The Artistic Production Assistant Intern should learn and/or experience the following during their tenure with the California Philharmonic:
- Thorough understanding of artist relations and artistic planning
- Practical overview of labor relations involved with union musicians
- Stage management and technical production skills
- Behind the scenes understanding of a large arts organization
- Logisitics: planning and implementation
- Supervisory skills
- Budgeting
The successful candidate will possess excellent verbal and time management skills, a working familiarity with Microsoft Office and other office productivity applications and be self-starting. It is essential that the candidate possess good people and communication skills, a pleasant personality and willingness to adapt and learn. The intern's duties include concert production activities at The Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden and/or Walt Disney Concert Hall. Knowledge of music, although helpful, is not required.

Internship: Community Services Assistant
The California Philharmonic, an organization that blends excitement, entertainment, education and enlightenment, is seeking a highly motivated person to join our team for an internship position in Community Services. Specific duties include volunteer recruitment and maintenance, patron services and on-site event production. The intern must have excellent communication skills, familiarity with basic offic productivity software, good time management abilities and be self-motivated.
The Community Services Assistant will aid the Patron Services and Volunteer departments during our summer production season. Cal Phil's summer concert series see well over 40,000 patrons, necessitating a professional work ethic and the ability to deal with a fast work pace. From assisting in the recruitment, training and management of a large corps of volunteers (both youth and adults) to patron and donor cultivation, the internship requires a high level of communication and management skills. The intern will gain an in-depth understanding of the human capital resources a large arts organization depends, how community support helps enrich quality of life and an overview of day-to-day business finance. In addition to office based work (primary), this position does require some on-site physical labor assisting in the production of our Cal Phil Festival on the Green concert series.
The Community Services Assistant Intern should learn and/or experience the following during their tenure with the California Philharmonic:
- Community relations: volunteer recrutiment and retention; audience development; subscriber maintenance; donor cultivation
- Overview of sales/marketing for large budget organizations
- Event production skills
- Behind the scenes understanding of a large arts organization
- Logisitics: planning and implementation
- Supervisory skills
The successful candidate will possess excellent verbal and time management skills, a working familiarity with Microsoft Office and other office productivity applications and be self-starting. It is essential that the candidate possess good people and communication skills, a pleasant personality and willingness to adapt and learn.
